Having remained relatively unchanged for hundreds of millions of years, cockroaches are a common pest in homes and virtually any food preparation or storage area.

These robust creatures contaminate food and eating utensils with regurgitated salivary fluid, excrement and potentially harmful bacteria, which can cause food poisoning and diseases such as hepatitis, typhoid and dysentery.

Some people, especially those with asthma, are sensitive to the allergens produced by cockroaches. Cockroaches also destroy fabric and paper products, and leave stains and unpleasant odours behind.

Most cockroach species live for 3 to 12 months and take only 6 weeks to reach adulthood. Depending on the species, each female can lay 13 to 50 egg cases, each containing between 16 to 40 eggs.

Although sanitation and hygiene are important deterrents, even the cleanest homes become infested due to minute food deposits in difficult to get at places. Some pepper-like specs found in your kitchen cupboards are most likely to be cockroach faeces marking their courtship and nearby nesting place.

And if you see cockroaches (which are nocturnal) in your home during the day, you might have a serious pest problem.

Some simple steps that will help to control cockroaches:

  • Clean your house thoroughly, paying special attention to the kitchen and other food preparation areas. Clean regularly underneath the fridge, stove, toaster and other movable appliances.

  • Empty the kitchen's rubbish bin regularly, clean up any food spills promptly and store food in containers with tight fitting lids.

  • Make sure there are no sources of water, such as a dripping tap, since cockroaches need a steady water supply to survive.

  • Repair any holes, cracks or gaps in walls and inside cupboards.

  • Don't stack newspapers, magazines or cardboard boxes anywhere inside your home.

  • Keep compost bins screened and away from the house and maintain the garden regularly.

Did you know that . . .

Roaches can live without food for a month, but only survive a week without water.

They can feed on a finger print left on a glass or the spittle left on a phone. They'll eat almost anything... soap, hair, skin, paper, their own droppings and each other.

A female German Cockroach can produce up to 20,000 young annually. Some female cockroaches mate once and are pregnant for the rest of their lives.

Cockroaches eat each others faeces to feed the young 'nymphs'.
