Ants

Mainly a nuisance pest rather than a health hazard, ants mostly cause problems in buildings and gardens when searching for food or water and when they construct their intricate nests.

Attracted by a vast range of products such as sweets, meats, fats and oils, ants will also search indoors for water during dry periods.

Many species will recruit fellow nest mates to help gather the food found and return it to the nest. This can result in large numbers of ants appearing over a short period of time.

Some ants build nests in wall cavities and foundations, indoor potted plants or even in cavities in toilets and sinks. Nests are mostly limited to pre-existing cavities, spaces between objects or in rotten wood. Seldom will ants attack solid structures.

Outdoors, nesting activity can result in excavated soil being deposited in gardens and on brickwork. Generally this causes little property damage but some species can form large numbers of chambers close to the surface.

A few ant species will occasionally attack electrical wiring, being attracted to either the insulation or the magnetic fields. In these situations extensive damage has occurred.

Ants often move nest sites when disturbed or with a change in food supply. They may leave for short periods only to return later when a new food source is located.

Some simple steps that might help to get rid of ants:

  • Clean up any liquid spills or food mess immediately

  • Store food in containers

  • Clean out bins regularly and keep them sealed

  • Clean food debris from under fridges, ovens and cupboards

  • Ensure entry points are sealed to stop ants coming in. Common areas tend to be around pipes, drains, windows and door cracks

  • Vacuum regularly

Did you know that . . .

Australia has 1,275 known ant species. This could very well double with some further research. Most of the known Australian ant species are only found in Australia. There are around 15,000 different species of ants worldwide.

It has been estimated that an ant's brain may have more processing power than the computer that controlled the first NASA moon mission.

Ants can lift up to 20 times their own body weight, which is about the equivalent of you lifting a car.

The combined weight of every ant in the world is greater than the combined weight of every human.
